Male impotence also known by doctors as erectile dysfunction is a common problem which affects almost twenty percent of male population (it means that from each group of five men one of them gets affected by this condition). Erectile dysfunction can be an alarm for heart diseases and it is a problem that can affect a man at any age although it is more frequent at the age of 40 years.
An erectile dysfunction is the incapacity of maintaining the penis erect rigid enough to achieve a satisfactory sexual experience. Every man can have erectile problems at any part of his life especially if they are tired, suffering from stress or under the influence of alcohol or if they are suffering a disease.
Almost nineteen percent of men with ages between twenty five and seventy years old, the frequency of this condition increases with the age of the population, fourteen percent of male population with ages comprised in the interval of forty to forty nine is affected by this condition, twenty five percent of men with ages between fifty and fifty nine years are also affected by this condition and forty nine percent of the male population with ages between sixty and sixty nine years.
Erectile dysfunction can be organic (physical causes) or psychological. However many patients affected by erectile dysfunction of physical source can be influenced by aggravating psychological components. Organic or physiological impotence is the most frequent and it takes place due a penis disorder or to a disorder related to the mechanisms of erection. There are different types of erectile dysfunction.
Vascular erectile dysfunction
It is very common. It happens when too little blood gets to the penis or when the tissues of the penis are unable to properly retain blood inside the vessels resulting in a leakage of blood and a sudden drop in erection of the penis.
The most common causes for vascular erectile dysfunction are: cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension and smoking. On patients with cardiovascular risks, erectile dysfunction could be the first symptom of a cardiovascular illness which will evolve in time.
Neurological erectile dysfunction
It happens when there are problems of communication between the brain and penis, brain and spinal cord are unable to transmit correctly instructions to the penis through nerve sparing in order to set off the erection. Diseases responsible for the occurrence of this condition are bone diseases, diabetes, surgeries for prostate cancer and a damage to nerve sparing caused by lesions on bladder and rectum.
Hormonal erectile dysfunction
When the production of male hormones such as testosterone is below the normal level, this condition is known as hypogonadism.
Erectile dysfunction due to medication
Many different medications used for the treatment of different diseases such as hypertension (high blood pressure) or depression can have an important incidence over erectile function.
Psychological erectile dysfunction
In these cases penile mechanism for stiffness works normally, but erectile function is complicated by psychological problems due to anxiety and fear.
