There are many factors that can influence the sexual performance of a man, but one which probably hasn’t received enough attention is the one that involves neurological problems. Nervous system is one of the most important systems of human organism since it is distributed throughout the body and it is responsible for carrying important physiological information from each terminal to the brain.
It is composed by two sub –systems:
The ‘autonomous’ nervous system. The nerves that make up this system are involved on regulating body temperature, digestion, pulse, blood pressure among other physiological functions. They perform their functions in an automatic way without needing conscious orders;
The ‘somatic’ nervous system. It is composed by a net of nerves which connect muscles and sensorial organs such as eyes, ears, mouth, nose and skin with the brain. This is the part of our nervous system over which we have great control, for instance trough this system we can order to a muscle to move.
The erectile process involves both parts of the nervous system. The ‘somatic’ nervous system is involved on tact and on perceiving all the sensations during sexual intercourse while the ‘autonomous’ nervous system controls reflexes that open blood vessels inside the penis. Therefore any factor that can damage the nervous system will lead inevitably to an erectile dysfunction.
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis is a disease on which problems with the “isolation” that separates each individual nerve fiber inside the brain and spinal cord start appearing. The speed at which Multiple Sclerosis advances and the effects carried by Multiple Sclerosis may vary from one person to another. Some people may find themselves quite handicapped in just a few years while some other people with the same condition receive a minimum impact with a very slow advance. Generally it is impossible to predict the evolution of this disease in long terms.
Multiple Sclerosis can affect any part of nervous system. Among the possible consequences of this disease for men are the problems with erection and the difficulty for experiencing an orgasm. Almost 80% of men affected by this condition may also be affected by an erectile dysfunction.
Damage to the spinal cord
Damages to the spinal cord like what happens with other diseases may affect in different ways to the patients depending on the physiological characteristics of each individual. Men who have suffered damages on the lower part of the column are an easy target for erectile problems. Up to seventy five percent of men with damages on spinal cord are incapable of having an adequate erection to penetrate the vagina.
Some other Neurological diseases
There are other diseases like Parkinson, epilepsy, apoplexy and Alzheimer's disease are examples of neurological diseases that are responsible for erectile problems. A man who has suffered any of these conditions and is suffering of erectile dysfunction should have a medical check immediately in order to corroborate the symptoms and define the real cause for erectile problems.
